Words cannot describe the awe we felt when we arrived at Abu Simbel.
The two temples at Abu Simbel were originally carved out of a mountainside in 13 century BC as a monument to the Pharaoh Ramses II and his queen Nefertari. In 1968, the two temples were completely dismantled and rebuilt into an artificial hill to avoid them being flooded and submerged when Lake Nasser and the Aswan High Dam were constructed.
It's a 3 hour bus ride from Aswan, which meant a 3.30am wake-up call for us. Totally worth it though!

Have you ever seen anything this impressive?
